The former England manager Reveals Focus on Mentoring Young People Instead of Returning to Coaching
Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be difficult to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.
The former coach indicated his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting young people and addressing what he described as a dominant downbeat story now found in the country.
Exploring Fresh Opportunities Outside of The Sport
During a broadcast discussion, he was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
Dedication to Mentorship
Prior to the publication of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he stated that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for the youth, drawing on experiences from his tenure as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
He feels that his experience leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.
“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”
Parenting and Guiding Young People
Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”
He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Unity Over Discord
He stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes disagreement.
“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”
His forthcoming book, Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on guidance and country pride based on his notable career.
